Cardiology MRI Ultrasound
Unlike X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scans, MRI does not use radiation. Instead, it uses a large magnet and radio waves to acquire 3 dimensional images without the need for a contrast agent. This allows us to examine organs and blood vessels in your body in great detail without the need for invasive procedures.
The quality of your BIOMED SCAN RMN images depends on your ability to remain completely still throughout the imaging process. It is also important that you follow the breath holding instructions that are given to you during the study. For this reason, it is important to avoid caffeine, nicotine and other stimulants for at least 6 hours before your test. You should also remove any jewelry and metal objects, such as eyeglasses, as these can cause artifacts on the resulting images.
The Art and Science of Cardiology Imaging: How MRI and Ultrasound Make a Difference
To obtain high-quality cardiac MRI images, we may need to synchronize your MRI sequence with the rhythm of your heart. This can be achieved by placing electrocardiogram (ECG) leads on your chest. These are small, sticky patches that the nurse or technologist will place around your chest. The lead will help the MRI machine know when your heart is beating, and it can then align your images with your heart beat.
Some patients with implanted heart devices (such as pacemakers and defibrillators) can undergo MRI, but they require special considerations. If you or your child has an implanted device, please talk to our cardiologist before scheduling your MRI.
